Sweetheart Holland
We found beautiful girl 6 years ago in middle of the road in front of the Montgomery Street Post Office. She was trying to eat the contents of a fast food bag that had been discarded by a careless individual. Normally, I would shun any type of littering, however, providentially it was this act that caused our car to stop and help the pitiful looking creature. Cars were whipping by and she was in eminent danger of being hit at any moment. I picked her up in my arms. Her brown pitiful eyes had great pain in them. She then collapsed from starvation. Her look was “do with me as you will.” She was rushed to an emergency veterinarian clinic where we were given grim news. She was malnourished almost to the point of death. A rope still clung around her neck where she had broken free. Her back was scared from the fighting she was forced to endure. She had heart worms. Also, someone had placed a device in her mouth to spread it open to make her more competitive in fighting.
Her wounds were healed and the heartworms treated. The rope and mouth device were removed. The dog, being of a gentle and loving nature was named her Sweetheart by our 12 year old daughter. Not knowing her birth date or exact age, it was decided that we would celebrate it on February 14th(the day for all “Sweethearts”)
